The concept of this watercolour painting was to capture, visually, two of St Helena Island’s most important endemics.
These are the St. Helena Wirebird (Charadrius sanctaehelenae) and the St Helena Ebony (Trochetiopsis ebenus) both of which are very rare and, unfortunately, endangered.
The Wirebird can only be found on the Island and our lovely Ebony here and at Kew Gardens, making these plants and birds very unique.
Extensive conservation is ongoing and is making a difference. However, these two species still remain on the critical list.
I hope that by portraying these, I might have done my own small bit in generating more publicity. I felt by showing the birds as a family group would have a far broader appeal, bringing their plight to more peoples notice. I do hope so.
