10th June 1956: New General Hospital opened.
5th October 1978: Arrival of RMS St Helena on her maiden voyage.
24th November 1979: Swimming pool whose construction was supervised by the Royal Engineers was opened, followed by a Gala.
27th July 1981: Royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer celebrated with “Royal Wedding Sports” on Francis Plain.
20th May 1982: RMS St. Helena requisitioned for service with the British Task Force in the Falkland Islands.
2nd July 1987: Mini roundabout outside the Canister in Jamestown comes into operation, the first on the island.
5th June 1989: Prince Andrew School officially opened by John Mark Taylor MP.
15th June 1990: 24 hour music festival held at High Knoll. Funds that were raised assisted in purchasing a heart monitor and defibrillator.
30th November 1990: Arrival of new RMS St. Helena on her maiden voyage.
31st August 1991: Oman Sea One capsized in heavy seas and four men lost their lives.
21st May 1993: Time capsule sealed at the sea front during St. Helena Day celebrations. (To be opened in 2193)
14th December 1994: The Frontier (vessel confiscated for drug smuggling) scuttled at Lemon Valley after lying at anchor in James Bay for 3 years 357 days.
31st March 1995: Television introduced to the island. The first network was CNN.
8th December 1996: Start of the first Cape Town to St. Helena Governor’s Cup yacht race, involving 12 vessels.
