11th October 1813: St Helena library established.
27th May 1839: Slavery abolished on St Helena.
4th October 1840: Napoleon’s remains embarked on the French frigate La Belle Poule to be transported back to France. The vessel sailed on the 8th October.
June 1854: Opening of the St Helena museum.
1888: The records show that Jamestown was lit for the first time, the fuel used was paraffin.
23rd February 1900: The Island is connected to England by cable.
1st February 1903: Foundation of cricket league by H W Solomon
11th September 1911: SS Papanui arrives in James Bay on fire and burns out after an explosion.
24th July 1912: Inauguration of Boy Scouts at Plantation House.
28th September 1920: Norwegian ship Spangeried catches fire and sinks at her moorings in James Bay.
30th May 1922: Start of St. Helena association football league.
November 1929: First motor car to run on island roads.
22nd Oct, 1941: RFA Darkdale torpedoed by German submarine U68. The ship burnt for about three hours and then sunk. There were just two survivors out of a crew of forty six.
22nd July 1941: Schools on St. Helena are brought together under Government control, and education becomes compulsory for all children between 5 and 15.
1st January 1953: Income Tax introduced on St Helena.
