Introduction

One hundred and twenty five years ago in May 1884, HMS Opal on route from Simon’s Town, South Africa, arrived in St Helena.  Three Sailors called the ‘Blue Jackets’ came ashore and under the leadership of one James Bashard started the Salvation Army on the Island.

The St Helena Corps is part of the Southern Africa Territory, Western Cape Division, with its headquarters based in Wynberg South Africa.  Over the years the Army on St Helena have been blessed by the Leadership of Officers from overseas.  However, in 2007, (having being without officers for three years), Coral Yon a local Salvationist born and bred on the island was commissioned in Claremont Corps Capetown as a Lieutenant.  This is a single spouse appointment, but Lieutenant Yon is ably supported by her husband Keith, along with fellow Salvationists and friends of the Army.

Lieutenant Yon says that her appointment has proved challenging, but also very rewarding.    She has received incredible respect and support from everyone on the island.

Even though St Helena remain isolated from the outside world (only means of getting to the island is by ship), the Salvationists remain faithful to God and the Army.  The Salvationists look forward to the visit of the Territorial Leaders Colonels Andre’ and Silvia Cox in November this year to mark this great milestone in the Army’s history on St Helena.
